The well-recognized expert (and ClotCare editorial board member), Vic Tapson, MD of Duke University Medical Center has provided a very well-written review which covers all clinical aspects of pulmonary embolism from the underlying pathophysiology, pre-test probability assessment, the merits of various diagnostic options, treatment choices, and prevention. Also included is a nice over-view of the risk of PE and DVT during and following pregnancy.

Program Summary: The primary goal of this program is to improve healthcare providers’ understanding of the clinical science and practice of the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of venous thromboembolism. The daylong symposium is divided into a general session followed by concurrent workshops. The range of topics will be applicable to inpatient and outpatient issues of venous thromboembolism and should be of interest to specialists as well as generalists. Significant emphasis will be placed on case presentations. A number of specific areas will also be addressed including JCAHO standards, heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, pregnancy, thrombophilias, and aggressive therapies. Coincidental to the March 14 date, March is national thromboembolism month in the US.

University of Utah Thrombosis Symposium

Course Description: Nationally, antithrombotic medications rank as one of the highest risk medication classes. As such, many of the current and proposed national patient safety initiatives address the optimal use of these medications for the prevention and management of thrombotic disorders. In order to improve the safe and effective use of these medications, practitioners need: education about and access to current practice standards and guidelines, a forum to be updated on new practice-changing studies in the literature, and tools to help implement change and improve outcomes. The purpose of this symposium is to address these needs through a broad-based curriculum of thrombosis-related topics.

Beginning Preceptorship in the Management of Anticoagulation Therapy and Clinical Thrombosis

This introductory course covers clinical and operational aspects of care and will be helpful to providers putting together an anticoagulation clinic, or just entering this field of medicine. It is recommended as a prerequisite for the Advanced Preceptorship if you are new to the science of thrombosis. Registration fee also includes breakfast, lunch, and participation in the New Mexico Thrombosis Journal Club dinner meeting the evening of November 6, a Thrombosis Primer, and a useful course syllabus.

Advanced Preceptorship in the Management of Anticoagulation Therapy and Clinical Thrombosis

Thrombosis Focus
Where: Massachusetts General Hospital
When: Tuesday, March 25, 2008
Thrombosis Focus is a main corridor event for the hospital community. Information about DVT risk assessment, treatment, and prevention will be displayed in the main corridor. Those attending will have the opportunity to participate in lots of hands on opportunities, including "Design your own sock!". Thrombosis Focus is scheduled for Tuesday, March 25, 2008. Staff from the Anticoagulation Management Service and the Vascular Center (including a portable doppler machine) will be on hand to answer questions.
