This is an article from NBC (National Broadcast Corporation)in the States.
We all hear of or have experinced what some hospital ER(A&E in UK) do with people that walk in and say they suspect a DVT or they have something they can not explain, this story is what one could call, the worst case scenario. Already, as a DVT outpatient you know what the symptoms are, you recognise them, so don't let them bully you in a corner...

I agree, there is no reason this should have happened.

OMG ! ! !

This is soooooooo very frightening. How the heck are we to make our hospitals and GPs and 'the world in general' more aware? How many more sudden deaths will it take?

At my hospital's A&E, it was a weekend worker (and we know who always land the crummy w/e duties!) - very junior doctor who arrived at the opinion that I'd a PE. She admitted me as a matter of urgency, another very young guy colleague fully agreed with her diagnosis ... but once on the ward - I became a patient of a senior registrar/consultant - the sort who does a kingly, all-kneel-before-me, stroll around wards once or twice a week - if you are lucky. I was admitted on Saturday morning, nurses changed saline drips and ensured I was getting enough oxygen, thru to the following Tuesday evening when I at last had a CT scan ... no stretchy support stockings (mind you I had one leg in a plaster cast!), no leg scans, no precautionary anti-coagulant jabs, no idea what was going on, no information shared! (And me feeling completely shattered, scared out of my wits and too tired to say boo to a goose.)
One of the medical team who must have been tracing the footsteps of lord-high-and-mighty-consultant arrived at my bedside after 10 pm that Tuesday night - to tell me they had found multiple clusters of PEs in both lungs! Within the hour I had a first enoxaparin injection.
Yep, I suppose it could have been worse, I could have been in New York.
Hey, dero, thanks once again for the news it is truly shocking - so very sad ... let's hope that websites like this, and the various plights and experiences of your membership are acknowledged and acted upon. There is so much information here that can only help the medical bods improve their knowledge of the situations.
Feel like printing out giant notices with the LDgoaDVT URL and posting them all over the local hospital and doctor surgery walls.
Take care

Yes... this was the most horrible, sickening piece of news. Wow--totally inhuman. Just shocking.

Linda, I agree with you. I find a site in the U.S.A., where they have made a small poster advertising their local DVT online forum and have been spreading the word by passing it out to labs, Dr.'s offices, hospitals, etc. You can find it at: http://files.meetup.com/1038164/Tear-off%20Flyer%20-%20for%20posting%20in%20medical%20centers.pdf . It might take a minute to load because it's a pdf.

What do you think Dero? Maybe we can make something like this, and all of us spread it around as much as we can, in order to get more people here.

Raising public awareness is one thing. Trying to raise healthcare awareness is a whole different story. Currently in the U.S., deaths as a result of Venous Thromboembolism (DVT/PE) is the third leading cause of "preventable" hospital deaths. There are a lot of healthcare professional organizations created in the last couple of years with the intention to raise healthcare awareness, but the problem is unless there is an awareness month taking place, most of the health care organizations are silent.

As a member of a Patient Advocacy Organization, the job is full-time 24/7 (minus the pay of course). I find it very frustrating that pharmaceuticals companies invest so much money into these healthcare organization for DVT Awareness yet the same pharmaceutical companies ignore the patient advocacy organizations. The same organization which are doing 3-fold what that healthcare organization is doing, and we are doing it without the funding. Yes we are funded for patient education seminars, but that's not enough to get the message out to the public. How do we get past this, by rallying the support of patients and their families.

Brenda, NATT has developed a Chapter Development Manual which focus' on support groups. The key to a success support group (and I'm not talking in terms of an on-line support group) is to have the support of a local healthcare professional who specializes in treatment of DVT/PE. The healthcare professional can be a MD or RN and it present during support groups meetings. To date, the only successful support group belongs to Brigham and Women's Hospital who has had a support group since 1996. Ruth Morrison, RN who helps run that group was an essential part if helping to develop the national chapter and support group which NATT is establishing here in the U.S.. I'm reviewing a chapter development manual, once it has been finalized I would be glad to sent you and Denis an electronic copy
