Hello all,

In Jan/09 I was diagnosed with Deep Vein Thrombosis in the left leg. I am a bus driver by trade and believe I got this from prolong seating on the job. I have more to my story and about the test's I've gone through, but everytime I write long I find I get kicked off the site and lose my writing.
I am on Coumadin 10mg (side affects: Hair falling out; headaches and tireness and fatigue). It took them some time to stablize my INR but it's ok now, I go once a week to get checked and now my doctor said bi-weekly is fine. I'm just watching what I eat love Japanese food and there is alot of Vitamin K foods here. (Green tea, sea-weed, gomee, miso soup (soy bean paste), edamamee). So now I'm just waiting to here if I can get into see the Hematologist sooner, my appoinment to date if for the end of July. So it's a waiting game and waiting to see if and when I can return to work. But thanks for having this site, take care.

Valerie

So I am told by my doctor that I can't work until futher notice and until the leg stops hurting. When will that be? Who knows, just that it still get swollen and throbs at the best of times. I do where compression stockings (high thighs) very fashional, can't wait to wear them in the summer when it's nice and hot Sad But I'm really hoping to get into see a Hematologist asap. How long did you wait for and how long does it usually take to see one? As for the type of test's I've done, a D-dimer when I first went in to the ER and Doppler Ultrasound. I just resently had another Ultrasound done and the clots are partially blocking not fully like before so I guess that's a good thing. I also asked to check my right leg just to be sure they did not more and also it was not missed since they never checked the first time round.

The next thing I'm trying to find out is since I still have the clots, and I can't work, I need to do something so I don't gain wait sitting at home. What kind of exercises are good? Can I do Exercises?

I was reading about the other side effects from the Coumadin and ok now I understand why I get emotional over the stupid things, plus I find I have a huge appetite sometimes and other times I don't feel like eating anything. Now I have a cold and have to make sure I watch what cold medicines are good for me and the ones that are not, so it does not mis in with the Coumadin.

Well thanks again for having this site, it does help. Just wish there was a place here in Vancouver that I can go to that specializes in Thrombosis. I tried to look and my doctor doesn't know of any if there is?

Hi Valerie,

Agnes Lee
Title: Director of the Thrombosis Clinic, Vancouver General Hospital.

Ask your GP for a referral and tell your Dr. that a person ALL THE WAY ACCROSS THE COUNTRY, from Ottawa knew of Dr Lee.
Here is her sheet:(This was just before she moved to Vancouver...)
http://fhs.mcmaster.ca/medicine/hematology/faculty_member_lee.htm

The best person to talk about medication interaction is your pharmacist, let him/her know that you are on warfarin and that you have a cold and need some medication for it. It's amazing what they HAVE to know.
Again if you have any other questions, don't hesitate...

Hello Dero,

Thanks for the info, I'm trying to get a hold of my family doctor to get this new infor for a referal to her. I do have an appointment to see a Hematologist Dr. Foltz at St. Paul's Hospital, but that is not until the end of July.

I just find it very fustrating because I'm only going off on what my family doctor knows, and I find it's a long time to see a specialist. But if it's more urgent I'm sure they would get me in to see one soone.

I also find it odd, because I am on WCB for this. I can't drive buses at this moment because my leg get sore and swells up. I tried to go back to work about two weeks ago and it seam to of got worse (like I took two steps back). So now I'm trying to walk to what I was walking before, but not the same amount leg hurts more. Other than that I'm trying to think of what other exercises to do that is low impact or if I should not do any at the moment? A month ago I did try Aqua-fit class but I found even that hurt my leg (I may try Deep Water Aqua-fit).

Then there is Physio-Therapy (because WCB will pay for this) but I need a referal from the Hematologist (umm July!) and till then I don't think I will continue to go back to work. It's just a hard thing because the job I do is I either drive part-time or work as a utiliy worker and that involves being on my feet for long periods of time. (Catch 22!) Then there is the question, is bus driving (especially long periods behind the wheel) a visiual job that I can do with this condition?

Well will keep you posted on thing that are happening or not have happened yet Surprised) Take Care

Hi Val,

If I read this correctly, you are regressing and not progressing, no improvements have occurred in the last three months, to me that is enough for you to see your family Dr. and say "what do I need to have happen to me, before I can see a specialist? Some family Dr. know somethings about DVT/PE but it ends there, you NEED to see a specialist and in my opinion that is a hematologist
(he⋅ma⋅tol⋅o⋅gy
   /ˌhiməˈtɒlədʒi, ˌhɛmə-/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [hee-muh-tol-uh-jee, hem-uh-]
–noun Medicine/Medical.
the study of the nature, function, and diseases of the blood and of blood-forming organs.)

As for physio-therapist, with WCB or not (Workman's Compensation Board I assume) will not touch you because of your known DVT. I would also advice against it also, you want to stay away from any form of massage on your DVT leg, any water jets in a hot tub, whirlpool, jacoozi because you are still in the critical period where a emboli can dislodge from the clot and travel to your lungs and form an pulmonary embolism.

As for exercises, walking is the best known exercise as long as you do not overdo it, always make sure you can cut your walk short if your leg starts hurting. You REALLY NEED to become in tune with your body, to know that when it hurts it means that something bad is soon going to happen, not to overlook it and ignore it.

The other thing is to read, read, read and educate yourself on DVT/PE, because you will realise that even many doctors are still ignorant on the topic. It is getting better, but for us, it's not enough...
Hope this helps.

I know that there is a lot to learn in such a short period, but we all do it, some days are going to be worst, I won't attempt to paint a pretty picture, because there is no such thing when you talk of DVT/PE, we simply have to make the best of our situation.
We all have to remember that some did not make it as far as we have,
we are the survivors of this ugly disease.
Keep that in mind.
Smile

Hello Dero,

Thanks for the insite and the realisum of the disease. Walk, walk , walk and yes I will wear my compression socks when doing so (even when I do my lower leg still get's swollen). As for the INR I will be checking it on Wednesday (hopefully it's ok) it's been two weeks since my last one which was 2.7.

Thanks again, will keep you posted and hopefully by the end of the week my doctor will contact me so I can tell her about Dr Agnes Lee for a referal.

Take care have a good day Smile

Hello Dero,

So I was able to finally get a hold of my doctor (family doctor) and mentioned to her about Dr Agnes Lee. Hopefully I can get in sooner to see her instead of waiting till July 22. I think that is way way too long to see someone. Especially since I've been off work since January and can't give a date to my return. Plus my leg is still hurting, feel's like a charley horse at times.

I had a cold last week and was taking cold medicine's (Neo Citron and Sinutab, Nyquil stuff) all made sure they did not contain Ibuprofen only Acetaminphen's. I also tried Oil of Oregano (it helps with your immune system.) I found I was having more heavier breathing when i had this cold, that was kind of weird. Also my doctor said my lef may of been sore because when you get sick you muscle swell! Umm, I wonder!!Then I did my INR and it was high at 4.0 that was last Thursday so I'm going in today and hopefully it's gone down.

So I'm just hang out at home, not doing too much because I'm kind of scared too. Don't want to dislodge the clot, so I walk as much as I can. Even standing in one spot too long is painful, I just can't believe this is still going on and it's been 3 1/2 months. But I take it one day at a time, finding things to do around the house. Cleaning in organizing, reading and learning a language.

I hope all is well with you, take care.

Val, make your pharmacist your BEST FRIEND, he can help you on the warfarin's interaction with "prescriptions" and "over the counter" drugs, it's his job to know all about it.
As for your 4.0 INR you said that was last week, when did you find out and who told you and what did they tell you to do?
4.0 is high, but NOT terribly high, no cause for the alarm on the wall to go off, I have been as high as 5.0 once. It's just that you need to find out why and see if you can come back down to between 2.0 and 3.0
(that is your theraputic range, correct? )
Let us know what your new results are, when you get them...
Which language are you learning?

I'm off work also, I could not fulfill my duties (working while on Pain Killers is not an option, specially that I have to drive 50 KLM to go to work) at work with this gall bladder so I got a note from my GP saying I would be off until I was fully recovered from the operation.
Plus last time I had this much time on my hands, this forum was created...
Who knows???

Take care and be well.

Dero,

Well goo news, my INR was 2.5 the other day. What happened with the last results I had my INR checked Thursday April 9th in the am, and they told me if anything was off they would call me or my doctor. I never got a call back until Tuesday April 14th then was told to wait and test myself on Thursday April 16th. As for what she told me to bing it down, just to maybe each more Vitamin K foods and that was all (she didn't seem worried), she said it's good because the clots get dissolved more! umm scary I think, but also I mentioned to her that my leg was still sore and get's swollen and she said that would happen if your sick (cold, flu) because muscles inflame. Umm very interesting, because I',m not sick anymore and it still hurts. But I'm doing what I can, resting elevating, walking and of course Tylenol extra stength (rapid Realease).

As for being sick I did call the Pharmacey and she told me the things that where ok and not. Just maybe that week I didn't eat much or something. And yes the Theraputic range is 2.0-3.0 and I have been pretty good for over a month. So hopefully next week when she told me to check again I will be in the range.

The language I'm learning is Japanese. I'm going at it very slowly so I can remember what I have learned. The internet (YouTube) is also an amazing thing to use for practicing, but sometimes some of the words are wrong. My friend helps me out alot and I have fun talking to him and being able to answer back.

Well take care will keep in touch have a great week Surprised)

Great News,

Because of Dero's suggestion and me being pushing towards my GP. She was able to get an appointment with Dr. Agness Lee on May 15th. So now I can find out sooner why this happened and when if at all can I go back to my job (as a bus driver). I'm so glad it's in only 2 weeks, my other appointment wasn't until July 22/09. So that would have put me on coumadin for 7 months and have not even seen a specialist yet.

So thank you so much Dero for your help! And yes I tell everyone that if it's not for this forum and a nice guy from Ottawa, I would have had to wait. (WCB or my GP couldn't even get me in sooner). So again a big "THANK U!" Smile

Oh yeah and my INR from last two times I've checked is back to 2.5. But I also get very tired sometimes and my doctor said it's possible that I may be anemic and should go get some Iron suppliments. Oh joy more pills to take! As for the emotional rollercoaster, it's hard to deal with sometimes and I've gone to see someone. Hopefully this will help me coupe and deal with my mood swings.

Other than that will keep you posted on what Dr Lee says about me. I'm creating a list of qq's just hope I don't leave anything out.

Take care.

Good for you Tika!!!
As for being tired, that is one of the side effects from warfarin, don't start taking pills for that, you have enough of taking warfarin...
What are the Questions you are going to ask Dr. Lee?
You could post them here and we could help you with them...

Be well...

People should not be afraid to push doctors to get the care that they need. It's like they say, the squeaky wheel gets the grease! I’m not sure if it’s the difference in health care in Canada but my diagnosis was at the end of February 2009, I have since spent a month with a Hematologist trying to figure out the cause and have already seen a Vascular Surgeon for a procedure to “fix” the DVT… I thought that my case was taking too long and I was only looking a matter of weeks. If you accept the appointment times that they provide you with they will assume that you are not in need of their services. Great Job is pushing for better care!!! cheers

Hello all and Dero

Below is my questions and a little of what happened to me this last January/09:

Hematologist QQ’s

So how bad is this what I have? Why did I get this? Will I get better 110%?

How long does this normally take to go away (the clot to dissolve)? Will my leg go back to how it was before? Will the pain go away? What damages has this caused to my leg & veins? Can I get this back again? What are preventative methods? Why does my left leg hurt (calf and ankle) and also why does my right leg hurt sometimes? I feel popping in my leg is this normal (like bubble’s popping)? My left hip hurts sometimes should I be concerned? Also I have a shortness of breath, especially when I’m coming down with a cold, do I have clots in my lungs?

Am I on a pretty high dosage of Coumadin (Warfarin) 10 mg? I was on Heparin for 11 days in a row, why so long? My Coumadin dosage was also high at 15mg now I’m at 10mg. I am also pretty sure I had a minor Pulmonary Emboli. When I my leg pain started I noticed my breathing got shallower, then on the third day (Wednesday Dec 31st) I was walking to my bus up a little hill and when I got to the top of the loop I couldn’t catch my breath and felt dizzy (blacked out for a moment), but I gained my breath back and my heart rate came down and continued on with my job. I thought it was an asthma attach (which I have {allergy}, but very mild). Plus I didn’t want to spend New Years Eve in the ER. I had two days off to rest and thought that would help, went to work on Saturday (that was the worst and the pain was bad, along with the weather). Then on Sunday morning I decided can’t take it no more went to the ER and told them to humour me and just check for blood clots and sure enough I had it in my left leg (I think it was the hole leg). Was only able to do an ultrasound because my veins wanted to play hide & seek in my ankle to insert the dye for the Venography. In late November I also was experiencing a sore leg & calf cramps thought it was just because of the job and was muscle aches, so I went to my GP and a Chiropractor (she massaged the pain out), it got a little better, then this happened in Dec/08.

Some side effects I have been experiencing is my hair falling out (I got it cut shorter) but it’s still falling out. Also I feel fatigued, exhausted and tired all the time, I also have mood swings and get depressed. I get cold hands and feet, heavy periods (my doctor has inserted an IUD so the affects of that alone are happening) and I also get a sore back. Can I do anything to help these side effects? I also get a sore leg, hip, knee, calf and swelling. A lot of the times the pain is in the ankle area and on the inner left knee area.

Was this possibly caused by my job? Will I be able to drive a bus again (the job does have a lot of prolong seating depending on your work and not enough stretch time).
How long do you think I will be out of work for and that can I go back as a driver? They have a program where I could go back as a Utility worker; it entails to stand long periods of time.

What kind of exercises can I do? What should I not do? (Swimming? Aqua fit?) Are Hot Tubs or Sauna’s ok?

Before I go back to work, I’d like to do Physio-Therapy to get my strength back to what it was before if not better than that. When can I do this?

Is Massage Therapy or Chiropractors ok to do?

Is travel on a Plane ok? Long Car ride ok? What do I need to know and do?

Is it ok to go to the Dentist? When is it ok to go in for a cleaning and check up?

Is there any support groups or programs here in BC (Vancouver)?

What Test’s are we going to do? Blood Tests; CT Scan; Ultra Sound; Venography; MRI; Thrombolysis? (Factor V Leiden); Is this Idiopathic?

Is there anything WCB can help me with (I have an accepted claim with them).

I am off of Birth Control Pills, had an IUD inserted Mid March. Since I’ve been on the Coumadin I find I have heavier periods and cramping and now a lot more being on the IUD (which I got told will go away in a few months to a year). Sometimes I get very fatigue during this time, my GP said for me to take Iron pills with vitamin C because I may be anemic. (Could we check this too?)

I do have a Heart and Stroke history in my family, am I at higher risk now? Preventative measures?

What kind of medicines can I take if I have a cold/ flu or sinus cold? (Neo Citron, Sinutab, Nyquil (Dayquil), Oil of Oregano)

What else do I need to know and should do and can do?

An update from me: So I'm on the 6 month going onto the 7th being on Coumadin and still not back at work. I will be seeing the Hematologist again in mid July and she said that by then I maybe going off the coumadin. She also told me at our last visit that if I want to continue to be a driver it maybe safer for me to be on Coumadin since the job requires prolong seating for more than 90 minutes. But I have the choice (be on Coumadin or choice a different job?) Also she also wants me to see a Rheumatologist because she wants to check about my connection tissues and joints.

So now I just wait till mid July and see from there oh and the Rheumatologist's appointment isn't till Mid November/09 ( and that was a urgent appointment). My family doctor wants me to do body conditioning. Plus everyone (the specialist) are telling me I should loose weight. Kind of a catch 22 because since January/09 and I developed DVT in my leg I have not done too much, leg would hurt and swell plus I find I have a low energy levels. But now I have start Aqua fit (deep water)three times/ week and I love it, plus I also do a few labs (for cardio) prior for to the class. It feels good on my leg I can feel the blood flowing through, sometimes it will spasum and swell.I also try to walk even though my leg hurts at times (ice/ice/ice). Trying to think what else I can and should do (yes watch what I eat - portion control) and that's all I can do for now. So that's it from me for now, will update in July.

Take Care,
Valerie =^..^=

Is Hot Tub's OK? and SteamRooms?

Hiya Tika!!

OK, it's been almost seven months since you have been diagnosed, I would say that most exercises won't dislodge the clot from your leg. The only danger I see is for you to cut yourself if you were to start an extreme sport, but I tend to doubt that(correct me if I'm wrong).

For the Hot Tub, as long as the jet is not directly on your leg, meaning again, danger of dislodging your clot by the pressure of the jet, I don't think a steam room can be dangerous, unless you fall and crack open your head and have a concussion and or an cerebral embolism.
Those are the things you have to constantly ask yourself,

-what are the chances of cutting myself and what if I can't control the bleeding, GET YOURSELF TO AN HOSPITAL.

-If I fall and hit my head and feel dizzy, GET YOURSELF TO AN HOSPITAL.

-I have a clot in my leg, what do I have to do so I don't dislodge it from
it's present position.

Other then that, follow your dosage and have your INR done at the recomended period.

Aside from that, how is life?
When are you seing Dr. Lee next?

Take care and let us know what happens at your appt.

Hello Dero & Gang,

Well I get to see the Hematologist this coming Friday. I'm both excited and scared, but we will see what happens and hopefully it will be good news and I can soon get off this Coumadin? Do they gradually take you off of it? and I guess I will be getting an Ultrasound done to make sure the clot is gone (I will insist it).

I'm also meeting up with Brenda Blackburn this Wednesday and some others who she found on her site to meet and talk. She sounds like a very insperation person and I can't wait to meet her and the others. I've sure we will all have lots to talk about.

So that's all for me for now, will let you know next week how the visit was with Dr. Lee

Take care,

Valerie

Hi Valerie,

Welcome aboard! See you've been connecting with Dero (Denis) and the forum here. Great stuff! This is a super place with lots of information. The people here ebb and flow based on their condition often, but come back and hang out and check in. Lots of great people here!

Well, between your chats here, my resource links (on the DVT Support Group site), and talking with Agnes, hopefully you got most of those questions answered! If not, we'll try to help you find the answers.

Look forward to meeting you tomorrow at our first group meetup! Woohooo! cheers

See you then!

Hello everyone,

Just a little update and a qq/inquiry!

So I went to see Dr. Lee and was sent off to get an Ultra-sound done to see if there has been any improvements since the last one. I still have residue in the distal superficial femeral vein down to the popitel. I'm still on Coumadin and will go off it when my GP or Dr say it's ok to do so.

As for exercising I have been trying to: Treadmill, Bike, Epiliptal, swimming and walking. I find the Bike, Walking and swimming the best. But I have been exeriencing still a very sore left leg. My knee area on the inside along with the calf and ankle hurts also swells. This is even when I wear the compression stockings (don't wear them when I swim). Also I get sore in my buttocks area down the back of the leg. The knee area hurts alot, I've tried icing, elevating, heat, resting, massaging. Nothing helps is hurts alot alot alot. I don't know what I can due, I'm trying to exercise to loss weight so I get less pressure on the leg, but I can't cuz I'm friggen sore. I have had this clot going on my 9th month and still I feel pain. This is a little different unlike when I got the clot it felt like a charley horse (calf cramp), this feeling feels like my knee area is twisted or sprained!

Has anyone felt this? Will this get better in time? Is doing exercise while in pain ok? Should I ask for an x-ray and or a MRI. Just want a few suggestions or ideas. Thanks for listening. Will keep you all posted what other events happen in my DVT life.

Hi Tika,

Good to hear from you, I saw that you guys on the Wet Coast had a good meeting, I read the minutes, GOOD WORK!!!!!
As for the pain you are feeling, have you been limping or have you been walking normally since your clot? The reason I'm asking is that sometimes because of an injury we limp and work muscles that usually are not used , hence they scream because of that and they hurt... I have had that happen many times, if I strain an ankle or whatever, I overcompensate with other muscles and THEY let me know that THEY don't like the extra work...
The other thing it could be is the treadmill, not knowing how you run, are you a heavy runner could be the shock/stress from that, try not using the treadmill for a bit. Running is a high impact excercise for the knees, the body weight being slammed on that one joint as oppose to walking (barely any impact, biking a rotational movement of the leg, no impact and swimming no impact whatsoever.
Or you may have strained your gastronimius (a series of three muscles starting in your calf and works upwards to just below your knee)
Or...
So many options.
Not being a doctor I can just tell you, it can be any of these and if it persists, have it checked out.
Good luck.

Hi Dero,

Yeah, running I can't do and won't. I just walk on the treadmill, sometimes speed walk. But haven't done too much of that lately. So I have just walked for about 1-1.5 hours (this is what I'm trying to do for exercise). I find that it's good but I notice the first 15-20 min, my leg starts to get sore, then about 30-40 I do start to limp. I do try and rest at a half-way point and stretch. Then I continue on and then later on in the day is when my leg starts to get sore. But I think your right that it feels like the muscles and tendons. So who knows, as for going on the bike and swimming it feels good. I feel the flow of blood in my leg, but a few times in the same area where the pain is when I walk I feel it in both swimming and biking. It's very fustrating cause I'm trying to help my body get healthy, but the pain keeps me from being more active.

Anyway will keep you posted, have a good day!
