What does it REALLY mean?

For the big medical conglomerates, that means spreading some money around, having some conferences, looking at some power points presentations, listening to some specialist finish his or her speech with "but more research is needed". (more research= more $$$$$)

DON'T get me wrong, it needs to happen, I am glad it happens.

But to you and I, the little people that have had a clot, (in my view THE REAL SPECIALISTS) what does it really mean???
It's simple and free, simply talk about your situation, talk about what you have been through since you have been diagnosed with various(DVT, UEDVT, Cerebral VT...) form of venous thrombosis. Talk to the people around YOU, your friends and families, your co-workers, I am certain that at least one person does not know of DVT.
THAT is what awareness is, make more people aware of DVT.
We have to remember how educated we ourselves were about Venous Thrombosis prior to our diagnoses.
Remember the "I'm too young, or too fit,or..." it simply does not work that way, if you have blood in your veins, you are at risk, it is as simple as that.
We have members here on LADVT that are the living proof of it, members that are 16 year old, members that are physically active and still end up with a blood clot...

THAT is what YOU can do for the month of MARCH, talk about DVT with people who are not educated in that domain.

Make them aware, that they could be the next person added to those statistics that we hate to see,
the ones that states that more people die from misdiagnosed or ignored DVT
then there are that die from Breast Cancer, Aids and car accident COMBINED TOGETHER.

Yes, it is THAT serious. We are survivors, let us not forget that...

You're absolutely right Denis, and I've been doing my annual preparation for this month via computer. But within this last year I began doing Farm Story game app for ipod/ipad so I designed a farm specifically geared to DVT Awareness and am posting a couple of times a day throughout the month about DVT Awareness, the risks, symptoms, etc.

I did a "google search" with " Canadian events for DVT awareness month 2011" and found ONE site that actually has DVT Awareness activities.

http://www.jgh.ca/en/...

Yes the good ol'Jewish General Hospital in Montréal QC.
McGill University's medicine dept is affiliated with this Hospital.
Home of Dr. Susan Kahn, Director of the JGH Multidisciplinary Thrombosis Clinic and head of the Epidemiology of Thromboembolism Unit at the Lady Davis Institute’s Centre for Clinical Epidemiology.
Her name may sound familiar to some if you have done some research in PTS, she is one of the leading Dr in this field.
Aren't you proud to be Canadian and waving your little flag?
I'm NOT, actually.
I am sending the Communication Manager at the OHRI (Ottawa Hospital Research Institute) a link to the JGH site and asking them "how come nothing is done in Ottawa (the nation's capital) about raising DVT awareness?"
They are aware of March being DVT awareness month because last year they had an article http://www.ohri.ca/newsroom/03152004.asp
in the local newspaper "The Citizen".
