I'm 16 and I got this!? Empty
PostSubject: I'm 16 and I got this!?   I'm 16 and I got this!? Icon_minitimeSun Sep 04, 2011 1:54 am

It started weeks ago when I began to get severe lower back pain. I had this back pain before from sitting on the computer too long but never this bad. After a couple days it started to go away until a feeling of tightness around my groin and fatigue in my entire left leg appeared. I then walked to my sisters house and it felt like I ran 5 miles just with that one leg. I still had the back pain so my sister gave to some Vicodin which helped it a lot. After sleeping I woke up to an excruciating pain in my entire leg (Besides my foot). My parents thought it wasn't anything too serious (or at least they didn't want to believe) so we waited a day to see if the pain would subside. It did not and the next day I went to a Urgent Care Clinic in Palm Desert, California that did absolutely nothing. The doctor was telling us that it was normal for us to not be symmetrical (that one leg was swollen), and that I was fine. I was not fine.

I had to wait another day at which I got no sleep what so ever from the pain. On the next day (3rd day) I was finally able to go see a family friend doctor which was a Gynecologist (I know but she actually knew a lot about DVT's). She was able to get me a ultra sound which revealed I had multiple blood clots throughout my entire leg including one on my left side of my groin; my thigh, behind my knee, and multiple ones in my calf. She told us to immediately go to Loma Linda University Medical Center which was an hour drive away. I got there and it was confirmed I did in fact have multiple DVT's in my left leg and I was emitted for two weeks where the first I was on bed rest for the pain (With Morphine and Dilaudid thank god) and the second going through physical therapy (with just Tylenol). As of now I am on the end of my third week with pain when walking and swelling still occurring. I also take Lovenox as my blood thinning medicine. I take lovenox by injection twice a day, and I have it approved from 6 months totaling 360 shots. I wouldn't be surprised if I am the only 16 year old who has gotten in on this forum. Anyways that is my story thus far.

PS: School started this week (Aug 29) and I had to go with the pain! It was a new school so the elevators didn't work and I had to walk up and down the stairs... It was terrible!!!!!

Edit: O Yeah Even though I spend time on computers and school, I do work out and dance and run and everything else to keep myself in shape. Some people even consider me as "Buff" haha since I bench 190 and im 5'10, 130 pounds....

Hi Jesse,
Welcome to LADVT (Life After DVT) as much as I wish you did not have to be here, I'm glad you found us...
Buff? HAHA I called that normal for somebody your age, I call that ACTIVE.
*btw the rank of a 16 y/o having a clot on this site has been taken already.*
One thing to consider, being that you had multiple clots, I would wait a bit to resume your lifting, dancing and running for the first 4 to 6 weeks post diagnose. The reason I say that is that while doing any of these activities you may dislodge a clot which could travel to your lungs (pulmonary embolism). Check with your Dr. about this.
Anything you read on this site or any other site on the internet, always check with your doctor about it...
On both occasions (yes, two clots in 4 years, the last one, July 13-2011) I had to step back from mountain bike, but I'm back at it now.

The reason for this is that the body has a normal process where the clot melds with the interior wall of the vein it is in, it becomes scar tissue (so it actually never goes away, like so many people think.). That process takes from 4 to 6 weeks, if you do anything that will increase the blood flow it may dislodge the clot and it would travel to your lungs and that, is what a pulmonary embolism.

I forgot to say that the doctors thought it was genetic or at least my family did since my sister (The house I walked to) also had a DVT last year, and she told me she still has them. So if mine was worse then I have no doubt i'll have them for a long time. I do have weight training for school though but it doesn't start for another week, and that would be my 5th week. I'm still going to stay low on the heavy weights and leg press (anything include legs) for a bit longer until I can run without and pain or the tightness I still get from walking. Yeah I'm going to see my doctor again in week and I think he will agree with most of the stuff everyone is saying here. Thanks, hearing from people with the same problem is helpful.

The best activity for you at present time, is walking and swimming, none weight bearing activities. As you are aware of your body, you will know when to stop, I'm sure you know the difference between the pain that is from training and the pain that says OUCH, you've gone too far.
Anyways, if you have any questions, try us we will do our best in answering them and if we don't know the answers, we can research it...
Take care, talk with you soon.

Hi Jesse,

Thanks for sharing your story. I certainly understand some of your concerns since I went through some of the same things when I was 15 and again the following year. The pain started out the exact same way, with some lower back pain, which I attributed, at the time, to the long working hours. The pain continued for about a week, until one morning when I could not walk as I was getting out of bed. My right leg was in excruciating pain. After trying to sleep it off for a couple of hours, a friend of mine convinced me to go to the hospital. The hospital immediately diagnosed it as DVT. This following weeks are a little blurry in my mind because of all the pain killers and the sleeping. Along with the DVT, I was also having infections and fevers.

Since the DVT was so severe, I was put on strict bed rest for about a month (give or take). Then, slowly, I was allowed to do small things like walk around the house. As you can imagine, as an active 15 year old, this was one of the hardest things to do. My biggest mistake was not listening to the doctors' advice carefully. I overdid things, especially with the exercise at the beginning. In the end, it took me a lot longer to get better... I would go on 5-10 miles walks, but then I was forced to stay in bed for a week. Dero is right; you have to take things easily at first as to not aggravate your condition! I though I was invincible back then and I didn't realize just how serious my condition was. In fact, I only understood this a few years ago. Hopefully, this will not be your case and you can learn from others' experiences.
