Lupus Anticoagulant? Empty
PostSubject: Lupus Anticoagulant?   Lupus Anticoagulant? Icon_minitimeWed Dec 26, 2012 2:54 am

I have just been diagnosed with Antiphospholipid Syndrome. I tested positive for both Lupus Anticoagulant and B2 Glycoprotein. It looks like I'm on Warfarin for life now. Have any of you been diagnosed with Lupus Anticoagulant? Should I be tested for Lupus also? Please give me some input on this.

Lupus Anticoagulant? Empty

Hiya Angryguy, I'm "idiopathic DVT, meaning they don't know why I clotted and this is on the clots I had.
This is what I found on Lupus anticoagulant...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Both words in the term "lupus anticoagulant" can be misleading:
Most patients with a lupus anticoagulant do not actually have lupus erythematosus, and only a small proportion will proceed to develop this disease (which causes joint pains, skin problems and renal failure, amongst other complications). Patients with lupus erythematosus are more likely to develop a lupus anticoagulant than the general population.

The term "anticoagulant" accurately describes its function in vitro. However in vivo, it functions as a pro-coagulant.

If you want to read more on it, here is the link.

Regardless of this, I would still check with your Dr.
Better be informed then sorry... But let us know of the outcome.

Lupus Anticoagulant? Empty

Yeah I'm still worried about being that small percentage that goes on to contract Lupus the disease. Getting the doctor to do anything is like pulling teeth, but I am biding my time. At lease I have a diagnosis. But even without the diagnosis the Hematologist was going to keep me on Warfarin for life due to the massive Saddle Embolism in my lungs. I guess they didn't give me the clot busting meds because they were afraid of the clot moving and I had to wait 8 months for them to tell me how serious my condition was. It just makes me have nothing but love for the medical industry!

I am so sorry that you never got a diagnosis Dero. The hematologist did tell me that some people get clots without ever having any clotting factors. That is where my diagnosis was headed until they found the Lupus Anticoagulant and B2 Gylcoprotein. In my opinion they should have left you on thinners and you would have not had any further complications. I'm so glad I don't have to fight with them about being on thinners for life. I'm actually relieved to be on them for life because I don't want to have anymore clots. Thanks for the information you posted, maybe all of our combined experiences will help others with their diagnoses.
