Some of you have been around for a while, what have you done since diagnosis? Back to work, disability claim (the lady that was attacked by a student in school - how awful.) Have you tried to go on with "normal" life or what? Are you on blood thinners for life or did you get off of them? Did you find out why you had DVT/PE? Have you taken anti-depressants or gotten therapy? Are you still in a relationship, is it strained, did it end, do you worry about being alone now?

Someone gave up mountain biking, someone else did not give up horseback riding, how has that turned out? I have temporarily given up motorcycles and am debating selling my Harley Davidson all together. How much exercise did you do and how soon? My diabetes meds were changed because they had caused me to gain weight and I went from overweight to obese in the last 5 years and now the docs tell me that is very bad for DVT and I need to at least drop the pounds that I put on in the last few years. I like to swim, I hate to walk, I do have a nice Trek hybrid bicycle rusting away in the garage. I forgot to ask my doctor questions about exercise because I couldn't even walk when I was last at the office. When can I swim again - how much does my incision need to heal, how long do I need to wait on my clot to go away? If I have more pre-cancers removed from my skin I won't be able to swim for a time after those, but winter will not be a major problem as there is an indoor pool about 20 miles away. Can I get in the hot tub or is that bad for DVT? Should I learn how to use the weight machines - I am assuming I can't count on just aerobic exercise any more? Does being over 50 and in/through menopause have an affect on all of this? Thankfully I will not have any dietary restrictions from being on Xarelto, diabetic diet as usual, less calories.

Of course I will confirm with my doc, but it would be nice to know what to ask. Please share your thoughts and experiences.

I am not sure why there is an incision... my treatment consists of Warfarin...and maintaining a level between 2 and 3. I was investigated for cancer, but none was found, so as much as possible, I am trying to get back to my normal activities. I had 2 dogs at the time of my diagnosis, the older slower one has since passed. The younger one tends to be a bit of a runner, and I have spent time wandering and calling for her. This was all complicated by a concurrent fracture inthe same leg...but which has heeled. Now I am dealing with the onset of arthritis.. and control of that is ... Swimming makes sense, as it allows movement etc. with low impact. Would this be in the ocean, or a pool? I try very hard to walk, or in the summer ride a bicycle to do errands..the only problem there is if I crash...so, I am a bit more careful.lnow. I found that my DVM gave more information about the heartworm risk, that is similar to DVT, that my MD did...

The major thing I learned after having two clots is not to let the DVT dictate my life, I remember JUST after my first clot, I thought I should be living life wrapped in a plastic bubble, because of the anticoagulants I can't cut myself, I can't eat this or I can't do that...  affraid  but then after your first cut, you realise, it does not bleed as bad as expected, if you are on Warfarin, you can eat greens...
If you find a GREAT Dr. as I did, you can talk with him/her and sort all of these misconceptions...
Hope it helped.
