PostSubject: Subclavian deep vein thrombosis in young guy   Mon Feb 24, 2014 12:33 pm

Hey all,

New here obviously....

To nutshell a 6+ year story, I'm 26, I've had a dvt in my right arm for 6 years, stopped taking meds for the past 4-5 years due to substance abuse(didn't want to bleed out) now that the abuse is sorted I'm going back to taking care of this dvt.

Problem is it's gotten worse, ie new clot formed in the arm and its swollen pretty bad... I'm scared for the first time in my life and still have no idea why I have this clot.

Any other people here have the same experience?

I just want to talk about it without worrying my limited family and friends.

Anyways thnx for giving me your ear, don't worry I don't bute too hard. Wink

Don't understand. You say 'had a DVT in arm for 6 years" then "stopped taking meds for past 4-5 years".

It's my understanding "meds" should dissolve a DVT in about 12 months. Sooo . . you were apparently taking "meds" for something else.

For swelling use cold packs - 20 min on then 20 min off.

You need blood thinners to dissolve blood clot. Especially with a SECOND blood clot go to a doctor. In the mean time - start taking aspirin.

We'll after a few years of taking warfarin my clot not only remained but a new one formed as well. I stopped taking meds for most of my 20's because they weren't working and I was in denial of the long term health risks accoiated with not treating my condition.

Roger that. I have leg blood clot with no shrinkage after 3 months. I have a niece age 26 who's into fitness yet got a blood clot in her arm. She's fortunate it went away in 3 months. I have friend age 58 who got blood clot in arm and it took warfarin a full 1 year to fully dissolve his clot. I'm ignorant about "subclavian" DVT. Cursory investigation it seems you'd be a eligible candidate for surgery to remove it.

Just a few things I want to correct... study
-Warfarin or any other anticoagulants, DOES NOT dissolve the clot, they simply prevent other clots from forming. The body has a natural process that melds the clot to the interior of the veins and makes it become part of the inner vein.
-In Canada, they do not believe in removing the clot from the vein, unless it is an life threatening situation (I'm also in Ottawa)I know that in the US, they are big on clot busting agents and also on clot removing...

Sin, there are other drugs aside from Warfarin that are more "patient friendly"
I'm on Pradax, no INRs, no dietary restrictions and no side effects, I could NOT
take Warfarin and properly function, too many side effects for me.
